Beauty of the Beast (Fairy Tale Retellings #1) by Rachel L. Demeter #mf #review @RachelLDemeter

Experience the world’s most enchanting and timeless love story—retold with a dark and realistic twist.

Reclusive and severely scarred Prince Adam Delacroix has remained hidden inside a secluded, decrepit castle ever since he witnessed his family’s brutal massacre. Cloaked in shadow, with only the lamentations of past ghosts for company, he has abandoned all hope, allowing the world to believe he died on that tragic eve twenty-five years ago.

Caught in a fierce snowstorm, beautiful and strong-willed Isabelle Rose seeks shelter at a castle—unaware that its beastly and disfigured master is much more than he appears to be. When he imprisons her gravely ill and blind father, she bravely offers herself in his place.

Stripped of his emotional defenses, Adam’s humanity reawakens as he encounters a kindred soul in Isabelle. Together they will wade through darkness and discover beauty and passion in the most unlikely of places. But when a monster from Isabelle’s former life threatens their new love, Demrov’s forgotten prince must emerge from his shadows and face the world once more…

Perfect for fans of Beauty and the Beast and The Phantom of the Opera, Beauty of the Beast brings a familiar and well-loved fairy tale to life with a rich setting in the kingdom of Demrov and a captivating, Gothic voice.

Beauty of the Beast is the first standalone installment in a series of classic fairy tales reimagined with a dark and realistic twist.

Disclaimer: This is an edgy, historical romance retelling of the classic fairy tale. Due to strong sexual content, profanity, and dark subject matter, including an instance of sexual assault committed by the villain, Beauty of the Beast is not intended for readers under the age of 18.addtogoodreads_zps55cd15da14

Let’s be honest – you’ve seen the new movie Beauty and the Beast – maybe more than once – and you’ve found yourself oddly attracted to the Beast. You can admit it; this is a safe space for freaky romance fans. If you loved the movies, then you have to read this new book by Rachel Demeter. I mean, there are a lot of Fairytale retellings out there with some naughty bits thrown in, but this one is by far the best I have found. It’s good. It’s really good.

Now, this book is less fairytale than historical romance, I think. It’s about a severely scarred prince named Adam and how he is brought together with a woman trying to run from her own, real life beasts in the form of heartless stepsisters and a cruel husband. When their paths cross, it starts off rocky but then pushes both of them to look a little deeper past the surface, let go of old hurts, and decide if they’re going to embrace life or not, despite the things that have happened to them both in the past.

This book is beautifully written, that’s the first thing that struck me. Some authors simply tell a story while others paint a picture for you – this book definitely paints a picture. And the characters are incredibly well developed. You will LOVE Prince Adam, and watching his transformation from “beast” captured a bit of the magic of the classic tale, even if just symbolically. See? Now even I’m trying to get all flowery.

Overall, I don’t think you can go wrong with this book. You’ll probably devour it all in just one day – it’s that good. Don’t let bad experiences with other fairytale retellings put you off because I guarantee this is different in a very good way. Great characters, great writing, great plot development, and adventure – 5 stars!
