Helping Hand (Housemates #1) by Jay Northcote @jay_northcote #mm #review

Jez Fielding and James MacKenzie—Big Mac to his mates—are in their second year at uni. After partying too hard last year, they make a pact to rein themselves in. While their housemates are out drinking every weekend, Jez and Mac stay in to save cash and focus on their studies.

When Jez suggests watching some porn together, he isn’t expecting Mac to agree to it. One thing leads to another, and soon their arrangement becomes hands-on rather than hands-off. But falling for your ‘straight’ friend can only end badly, unless there’s a chance he might feel the same.

This book is a complete story and can be read as a standalone.

I’ve read a lot of this authors books and have enjoyed all of them. This series being no different.

Being the start of the series, we are introduced to everyone in the house, but no back story which is nice, that way is not repeated book after book.

The first one is all about Mac and Jez. Both live in the home, both going to Uni, both tight on money and decided to stay home instead of going out over the weekend with rest of the housemates. With that one decision, the rest of their lives will be changed.

This 100 plus page story gives us everything we need. Two young men, discovering not just themselves, but each other and love. And we get to follow that processes. It’s a sweet tale, of how both are scared, one more than the other. How the lives around them are affected, the schooling, there mates, the family. I really enjoyed how it wasn’t all roses and chocolates for these two. That they had some serious things to work through, to make sure that this relationship is what they really wanted.  The pace of the book is such that before you know it, you’re done. The down side of that, not a whole lot of depth.  So, a great Sunday afternoon read.
