In an old house, just off Main Quadrant Seven, she’d found a box filled with odds and ends but on the very bottom, there was a book. While she’d seen a few, most were behind glass on the top floor of the library, she’d never held one. The cover was faded but she’d immediately loved the weight of it.

After flipping past the first few pages of text, a whole new world had opened. More than five centuries old, it contained photographs of an Earth largely unrecognizable to Lauren. In many pictures, white snow blanketed the ground. Instead of tank tops and loose cotton shifts, people were heavy coats, fleecy scarves and wooly hats with pom-poms on the crown. Lauren couldn’t imagine what that kind of cold might feel like. In her world, full of blazing sun, blistered skin and the constant scouring of dust, it was like a fairy tale.

And now, twenty-five years later, she was headed to Utuquq.

She’d never imagined she’d get the nod for this mission. Not only was being an astronaut highly competitive, it was political and she’d burned a lot of bridges. She had a reputation for being brash, opinionated and too confident. In less than three minutes, she’d fire the rocket boosters and head for another planet. For one year, she’d be living on Utuquq, trying to understand how they’d avoided climate change.

Satisfied she was ready, she took a deep breath and snapped the chinstrap of her helmet.

“Have a safe flight.” The voice of General Worthington came through her headset. “I hope the sweater is helpful.”

“I appreciate it, ma’am. As soon as I land and get my radio station setup, I’ll make contact.”

“Follow the protocol and enjoy the cold.”

“New London? Seriously?”

Lieutenant Gabbi Esser worked to keep the dismay she felt off her face. “That is…. Seriously, sir?” she added, after a too-long pause.

Her commanding officer bit back a grin, managing to keep from showing more than the barest dimples on her cheeks. “Yes, New London. Seriously,” Captain Schmidt confirmed. After a momentary silence of her own, she relented and gave Gabbi more information.

“The Achilles is set to rendezvous with the Odysseus. You’ll transfer over to liaise with Kiara Sadana, a diplomat from the Coriolis Quadrant who has, if I understand correctly, agreed to … um … marry one of New London’s ruling caste members to cement the treaty against the Drovek.” Even the captain couldn’t keep a slight tinge of horror from shading her voice at the thought—whether of the possibility of the Drovek aliens invading a human world, or the prospect of someone marrying into the New London nobility, the lieutenant wasn’t sure.

Still, Gabbi had to say something. “She’s selling herself to one of those backward misogynists? That’s …” She groped for a word awful enough to describe it. “Well, it’s barbaric.”

Schmidt visibly bit the inside of her lips to hold her mouth closed. The plasti-screen she held crumpled slightly in her fisted hand, causing the photonic display hovering in the air above it to shiver.

“It’s a big universe, Lieutenant,” the captain finally said. “We must accept that human cultural norms will vary widely among planetary settlements. New London was colonized specifically to reinstate the values of a civilization reliant upon a monarchy supported by a moneyed and landed nobility.” Straight from the handbook.

“I’ve taken the cultural sensitivity course, sir.” Gabbi’s tone was more than a little defensive. “I didn’t memorize the damn thing, though,” she muttered, just far enough under her breath that Schmidt could pretend not to hear it.
