Two-time ex-con Camden Sanders has decided that Hog Mountain—an isolated community on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia—is the perfect place to continue running small scams without the threat of more prison time. But there are a few problems with this plan. One is the neighborly citizens of Hog Mountain thwarting his dirty dealings at every turn with their kindness. Another is Jackson Rhodes, a closeted Hog Mountain police officer who can see right through Cam’s good ol’ boy act and plans to catch him red-handed despite the attraction they both can feel. But the biggest problem of all is that Cam’s past is threatening to catch up with him, and it could mean trouble for more than just himself.
Snakes Among Sweet Flowers by Jason Huffman-Black tells the story of “former” conman Cam Sanders, who moves to a small town with every intention of swindling the residents, but is soon taken in by their kind, welcoming nature. Cam becomes especially enamored with Jackson Rhodes, a cop so far in the closet he can barely see the light underneath the door.
Huffman-Black did an amazing job bringing these characters to life. Cam’s journey from con artist to hero was well-paced, and thus, believable. The way he allowed the citizens of the town to breech the long-standing wall around his heart – especially Jackson – endeared me to him.
I must admit that I’m a sucker for hurt/comfort stories, so when Cam brought Jackson into his home after Jackson was injured (to save him from being dependent on his parents). I was sold. To watch their relationship blossom in a realistic, yet enlightening way. Snakes Among Sweet Flowers had a great mix of romance and suspense. Highly recommended!
