Beneath the glitter of dazzling nineteenth century London Society lurks a bloodthirsty evil…
Vampires have always lived among them, quietly attacking unsuspecting debutantes and dandified lords as well as hackney drivers and Bond Street milliners. If not for the vampire slayers of the Gardella family, these immortal creatures would have long ago taken control of the world.
In every generation, a Gardella is called to accept the family legacy, and this time, Victoria Gardella Grantworth is chosen, on the eve of her debut, to carry the stake. But as she moves between the crush of ballrooms and dangerous moonlit streets, Victoria’s heart is torn between London’s most eligible bachelor, the Marquess of Rockley, and her dark, dangerous duty.
It’s the Regency Era in England. Young ladies are heading out into London society donning their long gloves to attend balls in hopes of filling up their dance cards with names of suitable bachelors. Victoria has ended her year of mourning her father’s death. Now at the age of 19 she is able to make her debut into society. She’s excited and giddy with excitement. With her beauty, wit and presence she’s sure to catch the eye of many young men but on the eve of her coming out Victoria’s eccentric independent Aunt Eustacia reveals a family secret that will change the future Victoria has always dreamed of having.
Victoria Gardella Grandworth comes from a long line of Venators, vampire hunters.
It is her destiny to fall in her Aunt Eustacia’s footsteps and take up the calling to become the one Vampire Hunter who has the ability to defeat the deadliest vampire alive. Intrigued and brimming with excitement Victoria agrees to follow her lineage and become a Venator. Her Aunt Eustacia and the talented and grumpy vampire hunter Maxmillian Pesaro guide her through the world of hunting, training her to fight and follow her natural instincts.
At first Victoria views her mission as an adventure and chance to be independent. She continues to attend balls dreaming of finding love while hunting vampires on the side but her two worlds begin to collide when handsome bachelor the Marquis of Rockley, Phillip de Lacy claims her heart. With Phillip she could have her dreams of a future filled with love, marriage and children. However, she can’t turn her back on the thrill she gets from hunting and she can’t ignore the strange attraction she has for the mysterious Sebastian Violet.
I really liked the creative way Gleason described how Vampires came into being. The story was fascinating and I felt for Victoria while she grappled with her feelings and the reality that the world around her wasn’t the safe world she once knew. I became quickly attached and attracted to each character. They all have endearing personalities and aren’t afraid to stand in the face of danger. Aunt Eustacia is the kind of Aunt we all wish to have, spontaneous, witty, funny and fierce. I’m definitely going to read the other books in the series. I enjoyed the Jane Austen becomes Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibe.
