When struggling waitress Melody Dylan gives a handsome, lonely stranger a simple gift she has no clue her life is about to take a drastic turn.
The stranger ends up being Clay Powers, a famous UFC heavyweight fighter. Clay’s large build and dangerous fists have always intimidated. People in his hometown keep their distance and Clay is fine with that. Everything changes when a new waitress at the local diner buys him a piece of pie on thanksgiving. Touched by the gesture when it’s obvious she can barely afford to survive, her warm smile and lush body churn up powerful feelings that leave Clay wanting more from her than pie.
Melody is running from her past and the small, country town of Garnet is the perfect hiding place. With an ex-husband after her and scars from her abusive marriage etched deep, the last thing she expects is to fall for a man who makes a living with his fists, but she can’t resist Clay or the tender connection they share.
Finding love in the most unlikely of places, the passion is undeniable, but Clay and Melody know their haunted pasts and unpredictable futures leave the odds stacked against them.
Melody is a new waitress in town. She escaped an abusive marriage and chose to start over in the small town or Garnet. Garnet isn’t known for much except for being the home of Ultimate Fighting Champion, Clay “Powerhouse” Powers. When Melody sees what she thinks is a lonely man sitting in the diner on Thanksgiving, she buys him a slice of pumpkin pie because she knows what it is like to be alone. Clay hates pumpkin pie, but he tries to swallow it down so as not to embarrass the pretty new waitress.
The two have an intense mutual attraction to each other, but Mel is broken and Clay has never given his heart to anyone. However, they find in each other what each one needs, even though they both have baggage. When Mel tries to break things off before Clay’s big fight, his attention is on anything but winning. His best friend Wyatt (the town sheriff) and Wyatt’s sister, Jules, conspire to take Melody to Las Vegas for Clay’s Championship fight. They want to use her as leverage to get him to pay attention and WIN! He sees her and ultimately wins the fight. But, trouble ends up finding them and things take a dangerous turn.
I love the banter between Melody and Clay. She may have been through hell, but she is as much of a fighter as he is, starting over a new life with nothing to her name. Clay may be a big, strong, scary, fighter, but he turns into a sweet and sappy boy who only wants to protect the woman he loves. And boy does he love Mel.
The sex scenes are steamy, the romantic stuff is sweet, and there is even some suspense at the end to round out this wonderful book.
