A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.
When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.
Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.
Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.
Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.
Sustained is book two in the Legal Briefs series by Emma Chase and a solid stand-alone read. Chase never disappoints in character development, she’s got a way of making even the smallest character have a voice that enhances the storyline. I love how she has very little filler. All the characters have a purpose in the bigger picture and each scene has a direct line into the main plot. I know that seems like it should be a given in any book, but it’s actually something I’ve found lacking often enough that I feel the need to acknowledge it in truly well-crafted books.
Chelsea has had a hard six months. After her brother dies, she leaves everything behind to move into his home and take care of his six kids. I absolutely adore this character. Sweet, caring, and feisty. She was thrust into a world of chaos at the hands of six little monsters and rocked it. Selfless is a tame word to describe her. One of the best heroines I’ve had the pleasure of becoming fictional BFFs with.
Jake is a defense attorney and a bit of a man-whore. He has no desire to settle down or have anything more than a one-nighter with a woman. Everything revolves around his career and his desire to succeed. Until a chance encounter with a nine year old pick pocket throws a wrench in his big plans.
Jake and Chelsea meet under less than pleasant circumstances, but the chemistry between them is instant. He has every intention of staying far, far away from the McQuaid clan, but he can’t. I cannot even tell you how much I love, love this couple. Jake is such a tough nut to crack — so very set in his ways — and yet he consistently jumps in to help Chelsea anytime she needs. And those kids? Anyone who has kids will completely get this book and some of the shenanigans. If you don’t have kids yet — this could totally be a what to expect learning experience.
A captivating romance that gives you all the feels. Sustained is a FIVE star must read for all romance lovers and for anyone looking for a bit of smut you’ll get FOUR drenched panties from this steamy novel.
