Cronin’s Key (Cronin’s Key #1) by N.R. Walker

I have found my new favorite book series!

Detective Alec MacAiden of the NYPD has seen and experienced some strange things in his lifetime but when a man turns to dust right in front of his eyes he’s about to come face to face with a reality he couldn’t have imagined even in his wildest dreams. Alec quickly finds out he’s not your average human. His destiny is connected to vampires and the man he is fated to love is a powerful vampire elder named Cronin.
Things get complicated pretty quick in the storyline and it’s start off with a bang but what do you expect with vampires, fated mates and an apocalyptic battle with a vampire who’s trying to resurrect ancient Egyptian Gods. This isn’t exactly your average day in New York and while most people under the circumstances would probably freak out and have a panic attack Alec focuses on the now and takes everything in stride. Ok, so vampires exist, fate has set him up with a hot vampire and a crazed vampire is after him.

Don’t get me wrong Alec isn’t exactly sitting back quietly while all this is thrown at him. He’s questioning things and taking a stance. He’s definitely unsure about what is going on but his curiosity, open mind and strength of self allows him to deal with and compartmentalize all the weird going out without flipping out. If he’s going to be thrown into strange circumstances without a choice he’s going to try and take some kind of control of the situation.

Alec’s an intriguing and entertaining character. His sarcastic funny attitude and his ability to adapt to his circumstances make him a likeable guy. Too bad all of his jokes didn’t get the laughter they were due but hey it’s hard joking around with vampires who have been alive for thousands of years and know nothing about pop culture. I absolutely loved Cronin. He’s adorable. I really liked his serious and reserved attitude. His sweet naïve nature when it came to relationships made him enduring and soulful. I was cheering for Cronin and Alec to come together but on their own terms and I’m glad they let fate guide them but didn’t let fate dictate their feelings. They let their feelings progress and develop naturally. The slow build up of their romance was more than worth the read.

I do have to say that my favorite characters were Eiji and Jodis. I hope at some point we get a novella focusing on them. Those two made me laugh on a number of occasions. I can’t wait to see how things go down when Alec teaches Eiji how to drive. I imagine hilarity will ensue.
Cronin’s Key is urban paranormal romance with lots of action and a touch of ancient Egyptian history and mythology. The characters are fleshed out, the connections occur at a natural pace and the storyline build up makes for a suspenseful read.
