In a life full of yes, no is the sexiest word he’s ever heard.
David Beauchamp might as well be in jail. After one too many misunderstandings with the law, he’s chained to the city by the GPS and alcohol sensor strapped to his ankle. Awaiting trial, cut off from usual forms of entertainment, he goes looking for a nameless sexual encounter and winds up with almost more than he can handle.
Reality comes crashing back the next day with a summons for another random drug test, and the man behind the badge turns out to be the very man who took him for one hell of a ride.
Probation Officer Tai Fonoti is used to handling other people’s problems, but he’s horrified when one of the clients his boss dumps on him is the sweet piece of ass he screwed the night before. It makes getting a urine sample a pretty loaded situation.
That single encounter left Beach craving Tai’s unique brand of control and discipline. But while Tai relishes laying down the law in the bedroom, the letter of the law stands between them and kinkily ever after.
Warning: This book is kinky. I mean kinky. With lots of sex. It describes a fully consensual, intense D/s
relationship which changes a character’s life. It includes impact play and bondage along the way to a very happily ever after.
Wow. Before I get into how much I loved this book and want to give it big squishy hugs over and over, I need to mention that it is a specific genre that won’t appeal to everyone. It is heavier on the D/s than the BDSM, although there’s plenty of that as well when the characters naturally move into impact play (which seemed as though it might not happen at all). It is also very long (comparative to typical M/M romances) at over 350 pages. On another note – although this # 5 in the series (I haven’t read any of the others, but you can bet I will now) I had absolutely no issues with it as a standalone. Finally, some readers who are used to quicker paced ‘let’s get to it already’ reads might find this frustrating. But I loved the living hell out of it, and I’ll tell you why.
First off, this review isn’t going to contain a lot of story summary because I want you to experience it the way I did, with every nuance of Beach/David’s and Tai’s story unfolding before you. The story opens with an anonymous bathroom encounter with a hunky, alpha guy that ignites a hidden need in irresponsible playboy millionaire David ‘Beach’ Beauchamp. When he shows up to meet with his probation officer (due to one of his little antics that always seem to spiral out of control) he discovers that Tai Fonoti is not only his probation officer, but the anonymous stranger who screwed him the night before.
Something about Tai’s dominant side keeps calling to David and something about David’s brattiness and obvious need for discipline calls to Tai’s need to dominate. Neither have managed to have a long lasting successful commitment before – David’s never even had an official boyfriend. This is where I’m going to stop giving you the story.
Both men are flawed – David more so – but Mitchell also allows us to see their vulnerable sides. Their chemistry is a slow build the way it would occur naturally if they were a true couple doing a dance of discovery and building trust. The real joy of this book is how each of their stories are peeled back one layer at a time – I felt as if I was experiencing it the way the characters would. Eventually, I was as hot for them as they were for each other. There’s a lot of sex – and even though some might find it repetitive – it kept the forward momentum going for them, bringing them closer as a couple and reinforcing their overall lightning speed deep bond. It made sense to me and I needed it to understand how quickly they fell for each other.
But mainly, this book is about the power exchange as a couple. There are sub plots in there (not tellin’) for each man, but they don’t take center stage. They’re backdrops – there for each of them to discover if they can carry their 24/7 D/s dynamic into the everyday dramas of life. These backdrops also serve to highlight the massive differences between a yacht-owning self-entitled millionaire and a working class tough guy with a genuine heart. That their burgeoning D/s dynamic – which was further enhanced for me because the Dominant was the working class character – completely changed both men by the end of the book is ultimately what sealed the deal for me on this beautifully written story. That alone is why this book needed to be so long – these boys needed the time, I needed the time, for that dramatic change to occur and to feel real. And it really, really did.
There’s a ton of angst in this book – I even got teary in a few parts. There were also some very funny moments. It was so gripping that I couldn’t put it down – I was desperate to find out where they would go from whatever point they were at. The D/s aspect of the book is presented perfectly – if you’re not a fan of the psychology behind that dynamic, you might find those parts tedious. Again, I absolutely loved it. There is impact play, but it was more about discipline and punishment than eroticism – so if you’re going into this looking for kinky dungeon play – this isn’t your story. If you want a realistic portrayal of two men discovering the joys and challenges of a 24/7 D/s relationship then falling deeply and beautifully in love – then you cannot miss this one. I give Bad Behavior 5 Lizard Claws and a standing ovation. Thank you for such an amazing story K.A.!
