Just One More Breath by Leigha Lewis

What would you do if you’ve lost everything? If the reason you woke up in the morning no longer existed? If life dealt you a blow so devastating that something as simple as breathing was just too painful, how would you find the strength to go on?
Nicole Miller was happy, busy with her family and her dream job. Life was perfect. When tragedy struck, she succumbed to her devastating loss and crumbled under the heavy weight of her despair. She didn’t know where to find the strength to keep going.
Divorce Attorney, Shawn Burns had seen too many destroyed marriages to believe that happily ever after actually existed. By avoiding commitment, he remained aloof, and most importantly, unattached. Nicole, Shawn’s old college friend, is the only woman that he would ever be willing to give his heart to, but she was married to someone else…
Some friendships survive under stress. Some do not. Can Shawn, provide the healing balm for his friend’s soul? Will Nicole ever be able to find hope, forgiveness, or love for her desolate heart?

Wow.  As a mother, I found this book devastating and touching.  Holy crap.  I just was not expecting to be as moved as I was.
Nicole had a great life.  She was a wife and a mother and was happy, until the unspeakable happens.  In one moment, her entire life is ripped from her.  So, she crawls under the blanket of her own despair and refuses to emerge.  Shawn is an old friend and divorce attorney.  He’s a little bitter when it comes to love, but seeing Nicole in the depths of despair moves something in him.  He’s always had a thing for her, but now he not only wants to try to love her, but bring her back to the light?  Can two people fighting their own battles come together and be happy?  Can they rescue
one another from a lonely life?
I love friends to more romances.  They have that air of realism to them that does me in.  Plus, this one wasn’t contrived or hokey.  They didn’t jump right into bed for some sexual healing.  It was a slow burn that took it’s time, and the buildup between them –while heart breaking in parts – was fantastic.  Hands down that was my favorite aspect of this book.
I did like the characters.  Shawn is great and sensitive and takes care of Nicole, who I honestly can’t blame for her situation.  I’d hate to think what would happen to me if I were in her shoes.  The only thing that I found a bit distracting in this book what that the tense seemed to change from first to third person and back again a bit.  I still really liked this story, but that was an aspect that I found to be a bit unfortunate.
Overall, I thought this was a really great story.  Wonderful plot, great pacing and development as well as at its heart a wonderful message about the surprises life has in store for you when you think you’ve lost it all.  4 stars.
