Breaking Away by Toni Aleo

BREAKING AWAY is a story of loss, healing, and love… where unexpected turns and heartache lead to passion. To Nashville Assassins’ leading scoring center Phillip Anderson, playing hockey has always been easy… as natural as breathing. His life is no different. That’s until his world is turned upside down by the death of his sister. While mourning his loss, Phillip has to find a way to make his very angry sixteen-year-old niece, Claire, happy. Now, as her
guardian, he discovers the only thing that seems to heal her lonely heart is dance class. But what he didn’t count on was the attraction he’d feel towards her drop-dead sexy dance teacher.

For Reese Allen, dancing has always been part of her soul. After having her heart  broken in New York, she comes home with the determination to make herdance studio one of the best in Tennessee and succeeds. When she sees
Claire dance for the first time, she knows the girl is bound for greatness and takes the troubled teen under her wing. Using dance as therapy, she suddenly finds herself bound to the young woman… and her hot-as-sin uncle.

However, Phillip and Reese are happy in their single lives. It’s simple. They do what they want, who they want, and
how they want, but from the moment they meet, the attraction is undeniable. Soon, they are more than willing to spend just one night tangled in the sheets. But, one night turns into two, and two turns into three, until they find themselves in a repeated dance of “One Last Time” that has the potential to be something more… if only Reese and Claire allow it.

Can Phillip find a way to thaw the hearts of both the women in his life, or will he be forever trying to break them
away from their pasts?

I have been waiting for Phillip’s story since I was first introduced to Phillip in this series.  Ladies’ man, pussy killer…you knew his story was going to be good.   And it did not disappoint.
Phillip Anderson is the leading scorer for the Nashville Assassins, both on and off the ice!  He comes from a
troubled past that has left him wanting no strings attached relationships.  His life becomes way more complicated than he ever dreamed when his niece, his very angry niece, comes to live with him.  For the first time in his life, he’s unsure of what to do.  Enter Reese Allen.  Unwittingly, Reese saves him in more ways than one, but has issues of her own that leave her unable to trust and uncertain if she ever wants to settle down with just one man.  But, what Reese and Phillip have is undeniable, and each travels into uncharted territory.  Are they strong enough to admit what they have in one in a million, or will they let their pasts continue to dictate their future.
Every single Assassins book I ever read is of the charts hot and this was no exception. Toni has a way of creating incredibly chemistry between her characters that makes each of her novels a page turner.  I thought what was really great about this book is that it really shown how Toni has grown as a writer.  The characters have more depth and intricacies than any character I’ve ever been introduced to by her before.  They’re vulnerable, yet strong.  Smart, yet so incredibly foolish.  Phillip is everything I knew he would be.  Sexy, funny, and sweet but without direction.  It’s like when he found Reese and Claire together, he found his true north.
It was a touching journey to take with him.  Reese I must admit I wasn’t too sure about before reading this.  I knew from other books that she was cold, distant and seemed very calculating, but this book clarified why Reese was the way she was and I grew to not only understand her and her motivations, but really like her as well.  Kudos to the author for changing my mind about Reese.
I really hope there is more to read from the Assassin series.  I love the mix of hockey and romance and have loved each book in this series more than the last.  Toni knows how to write not only romance, but sports in a way that makes it interesting and fun for the reader who may be a hockey novice.  I have definitely added hockey players to my sexy sports list! Personally, this book had one of the best epilogues I think I’ve read in recent memory.  I loved it, and it
lead me to the last page with a big, goofy grin on my face.  I think all books should leave the reader that way. Overall, this was a great installment in the series, and I give it 5 stars!
