I enjoyed this one quite a bit more than the previous book I had read by this author. We meet Gabriella who moves all the way to New York for love. Until she gets there and realizes she has been swindled. Hudson, who was a real person but not the person she met, is a closed off, very successful business man with dark needs. His one and only true friend Natalia also plays a big role in the book. While I think we are given the gruff side of Hudson in the beginning, we soon learn what has made him the way he is and it makes me adore him!
Hudson takes pity on poor Gabriella when he realizes he was used as a target in the scheme. While at the building she also meets Riya and the two M’s, who we also met in the Barter System and she befriends her immediately. They find her a place to live and a job (nothing spectacular). Of course there is the obvious attraction for him, but she wasn’t feeling it. I really did enjoy this premise. We go a long on Gabriella’s time in the city for almost a year before she has a true, meaningful face to face with either Hudson or Natalia. That is when the action really starts, but honestly, as soon as it got hot, it immediately cooled off. I appreciated that this book was more realistic than others I have read by this author; however I was just very underwhelmed by most things that happened in the book. The highlight of the book for me was the ending. It isn’t what we are expecting and I love being thrown off-guard especially in a book where everything seemed so predictable.
