Zara Edgingway is a twenty-six-year-old secretary. She has a daughter that apparently knows-it-all and a best friend that could possibly have the mouth of Satan, but she’s been with her through hell and back. Then there’s the hunk’a’licious biker neighbour finally showing interest in her.
If only she isn’t about to face her next obstacle in life, the one she ran from six years ago: her ex husband.
Talon Marcus is the president of the Hawks Motorcycle Club. For two years he’s had his eye on the quiet, reclusive, yet sassy, neighbour Zara. Finally, he has the chance to claim her as his woman. Just when her past catches up with her, she’ll need, not only his protection, but the help from his biker brothers.
Now, if only she’d stop fighting him along the way.
I feel like there are a lot of Motorcycle Club books out right now, and within the genre there are some friggin’  fantastic books, some just ok books and some books that just need more work.  This book firmly fell into the “needs more work” category for me.  In a sea of MC books, you have to set your book apart in some way.  This book failed to do that for me.
Zara (aka “Zee”) is a single mother who has moved in order to get away from Zee’s crazy ex-husband.  She, her best friend Deanna and Zee’s daughter move next door to Talon, the President of the Hawks MC…general hottie and badass.  They meet one fateful night, the result of which is an unfortunate nickname for Zee.  Zee never thinks that a man like Talon would be interested in a woman like her, who is just a normal woman but one night he claims her as his own, which coincides quite nicely with the fact that Zara needs the protection of him and his MC from her crazy ex.
This really could have been a good story, the idea was there.  But, for me, it just never really accomplished what I could tell it was trying to accomplish.  I had a hard time telling what this book was trying to be.  Is it a romantic comedy?  Suspense?  Sure, it could be all of the above but how it left me was just confused.   There were moments where it tried to get serious, but then the characters came back with a very out of place slapstick comment that I just found grating.
The characters also kind of felt like caricatures to me, not real people that I could connect with in any way.  Everything about them almost seemed exaggerated and a bit forced, and I never really connected with them.  As with the plot, the bones of really great characters were there, but the character build up felt rushed.
I don’t think the writing is bad in this book.  I did finish it.  I do believe that this author has a talent for writing, but I feel that maybe this book just needed a bit more mapping out to make it as good as it has the potential to be.  It does have very funny moments, when appropriate, and Talon is off-the-charts sexy.  I’d give this author another shot with a future book!  3 stars.
