Working It Out

A chance encounter . . .

Grace Warren’s life is safe and predictable—exactly the way she likes it. But when she gets roped into going to an auction to help out a friend, everything changes. She meets Seth Tuttle—a guy who unexpectedly kisses her then disappears, leaving her flustered and upset. If she never sees him again, it will be too soon.

A chance for love . . .

Weeks later, when Seth limps into Grace’s rehab clinic post surgery, she immediately recognizes him. Unfortunately, he’s every bit as frustrating and annoying as she remembered. Yet there’s something about him that makes her second-guess her carefully placed boundaries even though he’s everything she’s sure she doesn’t want in a man. But maybe Seth is exactly what Grace has needed all along—assuming she’s willing to risk safe and predictable for a chance at love.

I have never read a book by this author before.  What I found out is that this is an author that can tell a good story that will make you laugh, is lighthearted and entertaining, and has great characters.
In this story, we meet Grace.  She’s a physical therapist and seems like a pretty straight-laced, likes to play by the rules kind of lady.  She has this thing about judging people by the meaning behind their names, which I thought was both interesting and funny…I may start doing that (for example, Crystal I’m pretty sure means “evil taskmaster”…or it could be “book blog goddess”.  Perhaps meaning changes by origin?  I kid, I kid).
Anyway, she meets Seth by chance at a bachelor auction.  They kiss and she flees.  A few weeks later, he gets injured and comes into her physical therapy clinic.  From there, they have a bit of adversarial relationship.  I have to say, I love that dynamic.  I love it when characters don’t really like each other when they start out, and then it blossoms into more.  So much angst!
I think what’s most intriguing about Grace and Seth is that they both struggle with things from their past, but deal with those issues in very different ways.  Seth feels a major sense of responsibility for people in his life, as does Grace, but it manifests itself so differently.  I liked that quite a bit.  They’re deep characters, and throughout the course of the book, they grow and change, and help each other through that.  That’s the cornerstone of any good love story in my book.
For me, one of the detractors to this story is that once they begin dating, it does so fast from there!  Plot warp speed, Captain!  I would have preferred that unfold a little differently, but overall, I thought this was a good book.  You’ll laugh, you’ll frown, you’ll say “What the hell” and you’ll ponder the meanings of the names of people in your life.   I give this book 3.5 stars!
